Local knowledge

From Georgian Greenwich to 1930s Eltham: what a deep clean involves

Greenwich town centre lies within the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1997, and the streets around it keep a large stock of Georgian and Victorian houses. Further east, Plumstead grew fast in the 1880s, with small terraces for Royal Arsenal workers near the river and larger houses up the hill around Plumstead Common. Eltham and Kidbrooke filled with semi-detached houses in the 1920s and 1930s.

Each needs a different deep clean. Georgian and Victorian rooms have high ceilings, sash windows and decorative plaster where dust settles out of sight. Interwar semis often have bay windows, picture rails and panelled doors that catch grime along every edge. On the Progress Estate in Eltham, the garden suburb built in 1915 for skilled Arsenal workers and a conservation area since 1975, the cottage-style houses have smaller rooms where tight corners need patience.

At the other end of the scale are thousands of homes built since the late 1990s, on the Peninsula, at the Royal Arsenal and in Kidbrooke Village, which is planned at 5,300 homes. Here a deep clean targets limescale, kitchen grease, extractor grilles and window tracks, or gives the flat a full reset before a sale or a new tenancy.

Homes we clean

Greenwich properties and what we focus on

Georgian and Victorian houses near Greenwich Park

Tall rooms, sash windows, cornicing and fireplaces mean much of the dust is above eye level. The deep clean covers ledges, frames, doors and skirting, then kitchens and bathrooms, which often sit in later extensions where grease and limescale have built up.

1930s semis in Eltham and Kidbrooke

The slow parts of these houses are the stairs with spindle banisters, radiators in the hall and bedrooms, and the bay window with its deep sill. Banisters are detailed by hand, radiators cleaned on top and behind, and bay windows wiped frame by frame.

Concrete town houses and blocks in Thamesmead

The Greater London Council began building Thamesmead in the late 1960s, with concrete town houses and medium-rise and 12-storey blocks laid out around lakes and canals. Inside, the deep clean concentrates on window frames where condensation collects, kitchens, bathrooms and balcony doors.

FAQ

Deep Cleaning in Greenwich: questions

Do you take on deep cleans of period houses near Greenwich Park?

Yes. Many houses in and around Greenwich town are Georgian or Victorian and sit in conservation areas. Original joinery, plasterwork and fireplaces are cleaned by hand, with care on old surfaces. Tell us about delicate finishes, such as old tiles or original floorboards, when you book so the team knows before it arrives.

What if part of my Greenwich deep clean falls short?

Within 24 hours of the clean, send us a short note of what was missed and we book a return visit to fix it, free. The hob, the tiles, the skirting and the window sills are the places most worth checking that evening, before the house is back in full use.

Do you cover Eltham, Kidbrooke and Blackheath for deep cleaning?

Yes. We cover SE9 and SE3 along with the rest of the borough, including the Progress Estate and the newer homes at Kidbrooke Village. Blackheath is split between Greenwich and Lewisham, and since we work across all of London, we clean on both sides of that line.

How often should a house have a deep clean?

Once or twice a year suits most homes that have regular cleaning in between. Book an extra one after building work, before a sale or new tenancy, or when you move into a home the last occupants left in poor condition. In older Greenwich houses with a lot of joinery, a spring deep clean clears what winter leaves behind.

Can you deep clean a new-build flat at Greenwich Millennium Village or the Royal Arsenal?

Yes. Newer flats do not usually carry decades of dirt, but they do get limescale on taps and shower glass, grease on gloss kitchen fronts and dust in extractor grilles and window tracks. For a smaller flat in good order we may recommend close to the 3 hour minimum, and more for a larger one.
